The Northern Ireland Bio Engineering Centre (NIBEC) is a multi-disciplinary research centre which aims to bring together skills in engineering, science, informatics and medicine for the development of devices and systems which have applications in health care. The centre was created in 1986 and is based at the Jordanstown Campus of the University of Ulster.
Research Groups
- Thin Film Devices
Led by Dr Noel Evans the group has an established research background in radio and line communications, including: bioelectromagnetics, antenna analysis and design, radio propagation studies from HF to UHF, electronic systems for medical and biological telemetry and personal telemedicine using cellular telephony.
- Medical Instrumentation
The group is headed by Dr. E McAdams and has extensive experience and expertise in the investigation, design, development and testing of a wide range of biomedical electrode systems..
- Bio-Ceramics, Bio-Polymers, Bio-Mechanics
Dr. F.J. Owens leads the research group which has expertise in real-time signal processing techniques and knowledge-based instrumentation
- Medical Electrodes
The group was established in 1987 to research and develop flat display technologies for use in portable medical equipment, typically ECG monitors. J McLaughlin and P Maguire lead the research.
Collaborations
There is close collaboration with the Biomedical and Environmental Sensor Technology Centre and the Nanotechnology Research Institute also at the University of Ulster.
